No Warning Farm

Girl Power

We have over 100 tomato plants in the ground (I intend to do an exact count now that I finished the last transplanting today), and some are doing better than others. I mentioned this to Andrea today and she came to take a look at the ones I had concerns about. Tomatoes are my responsibility, but I'm not at the Farm full time and anyway, I don't know everything. Collective brain power is a benefit of this co-farming model and Andrea's theory was that a bug was affecting these four plants, but not the 4 immediately to the right. Why the bugs would be attacking one variety and not another is a mystery, but that's not really the point of this post; I will make notes about all of this and compare how the different varieties do in the greenhouses versus the fields, the North field versus the South field, whether adding charcoal to some plants and not others makes a difference...I will record all of that. But what struck me about this photo was that it made me think about the growing bond between Andrea, LB and me. I have not had many strong female friendships in my life, preferring the directness and honesty of guys. But over the last year or two, as the three of us have exchanged texts about some new idea, a photo, a recipe, a link to an interesting farming article, a favorite food podcast, or as we have relied on each other to check on each other's homesites...I have come to value not just the larger community here, but the very specific, engaged connection I have with these two strong women.
